Join Excelsis as it celebrates the fifth anniversary of the founding of the choir. During its five years, Excelsis has enjoyed the opportunity to sing in both of Melbourne’s principal cathedrals on numerous occasions, and to perform around Victoria and internationally.  In it’s Melbourne Recital Centre debut, Excelsis will present a programme featuring the genres that the choir has become most renowned for performing – African chant and song, spirituals and gospel music.  The concert will begin in Africa and then travel to the Americas, where gospel and spiritual traditions developed from these African musical roots. A concert event not to be missed, come along for a fun, inspiring and entertaining night of beautiful choral music in the exquisite Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

Excelsis joins with the Australian Welsh Male Choir, the Melbourne Welsh Male Choir, the Victoria Welsh Choir, the Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir and the Mornington Peninsula Welsh Ladies Choir to present the 2018 St David’s Day ‘Gymanfa Ganu’. Presented by the Melbourne Welsh Church and hosted by St Michael’s Uniting Church. Conducted by Tom Buchanan (Excelsis) and Jeanette Johns (Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir).

The choir will present an exciting programme of diverse and beautiful choral pieces, featuring contemporary and traditional European art music, spirituals and works from stage and screen. Excelsis have been singing together for almost six years and this concert will include many of the choir’s favourite songs, as well as a selection of new repertoire.

The choir will present ‘Jubilate Deo’ at 2.30pm and again at 7.30pm on 14 September, to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to get to this year’s concert. Book your tickets now!

Under the direction of globally recognised artist and conductor, Jennifer Tham (SG), Excelsis will present a programme of contemporary choral works from composers living and working throughout Asia. Tham has crafted a programme which showcases the breadth and depth of choral music in Asia, celebrating the rich choral traditions of some of Australia’s closest neighbours. Featured composers include Ryan Cayabyab (PH), Nan-Chang Chien (TW), Saunder Choi (PH), Francisco Feliciano (PH), Americ Goh (SG), Daud Kosasih (ID), Hyun Chul Lee (KR), Edgar L. Macapili (PH), Ko Matsushita (JA), Takatomi Nobunaga (JA), Ken Steven (ID), Kelly Tang (SG), Kenneth Tay (SG) and Tracy Wong (MA). Tham is renowned for her work with the Singapore Youth Choir and, under her direction, the concert will also feature guest youth ensemble, the Kingswood College Choir.
